Tips to protect data

  1. Make sure your organisation's security policies are in line with the rest of the industry's best habits.
  2. Ensure that every machine, including all computers and mobile devices, has security software installed and policies implemented before it is handed to the end-user.
  3. If a certain file contains credit card numbers, for example, tag it as such. That makes it easier for security software to recognise the file and prevent it from being sent out.
  4. Broadcast your acceptable use policies through the corporate network. Or, use pop-up dialogue boxes to remind staff when they are about to send data out to external parties.
  5. Smartphones and PDAs are an easy way to lose valuable data. Make sure such devices are locked down with the same security policies applied to your organisation's computers.
