Know your almonds

  1. There are two types of almonds: sweet, which are used for culinary purposes, and bitter, which are not edible and used in the making of oils and flavourings such as almond essences.
  2. When buying almond in shell, shake them. If they rattle a lot, it is asign that the nut is shrinking and therefore ageing.
  3. California is the world's largest producer almonds, shipping to more than 90 countries, with Germany and Japan being the largest importers.
  4. The early European tradition of wrapping sugar-coated almonds in sheer netting and presenting them to wedding guest symbolised fertility, happiness, romance, good health and fortune.
  5. Sweden employs almond as a symbol of good fortune at Christmas time; serving rice pudding with an almond hidden in one of the servings. The one who finds it can expect an especially good year.
  6. One belief holds that eating almonds before drinking alcohol reduces the chances of getting drunk and having hangover.
  7. A French novelist by the name of Collette has been quoted as saying, "Eating too many almonds, they add weight to BREAST."
