YES, you can help tackle the problem of climate change and avert a disaster. You can cut your CO2 (carbon dioxide) footprint by doing some very simple things:
- Switch off lights and air-conditioning when you leave room.
- Switch off your computer or TV when you are not using it. In Britain, it has been estimated that an office wastes $18,000 each year by leaving equipment on over weekends. Each time you leave a monitor on night, it uses enough energy to print 5,300 copies.
- On a hot day, close the blinds instead of making the air-conditioning colder.
- Unplug charges for your mobile or your cameras when they are not in use.
- Take shorter shower as heating water means more energy is used. Washing your clothes at a lower temperature also helps.
- Use energy-efficient appliances. New refrigerators, for example, use 40 per cent less energy than models made just 10 years ago. Also, compact fluorescent "spiral" bulbs are 75 per cent more efficient than standard bulbs.
- Drive less. A typical car produces three times its weight in CO2 emissions. If you must, use lighter cars which produce fewer transport, walk or cycle to work.
- Vacation closer to home. Avoid flying as it is said to account of between 4 and 9 per cent of the total climate change impact of human activity.
- Recycle to save the energy needed to make more plastic, glass, aluminium, paper and cardboard.
- Bring your own shopping bags to the supermarket. Reduce the use of plastic bags.
